NEWS! The 1934 La Jolla Cancer Clinic: Letters from Dr. Milbank Johnson in 1935 confirm that it was he who ran the 1934 Scripps Clinic which treated several cancer patients using a Rife Ray Machine. In his letter, he also noted that he had no nurses or secretary, that the records were rudimentary, and that he ran this clinic to prove to himself that the Ray Machine worked (the machine was probably Ray Machine #3, built by Philip Hoyland). Several other MDs confirmed the results of the clinic. Royal Rife undoubtedly observed the clinic from time to time, but there is no evidence that he actually had anything to do in its operation. In 1935, Johnson installed a Ray Machine (possibly #4) in the Santa Fe Hospital in Los Angeles, running treatments there two days a week; twice a week seemed to be the proper treatment, with exposure times of approximately five minutes.
In March of 1936, Johnson writes to Royal Rife that he "was glad Phil (Hoyland) could find out what the matter was with your machine so easily." - another clear indication that Hoyland built most, if not all, of the machines from perhaps 1932 and on. There are also notes that Johnson found it very difficult to determine the exact frequency that the machine was producing using "the fuzzy yardstick." There are indications that Rife had experimented with ray devices in the late 1920's, but its not certain who built these, or if Rife built the early machines.
Later in 1936, (shortly before he retired from Pacific Mutual Life Insurance) Johnson opened a clinic at the Pasadena Home for the Aged, working primarily on cataracts. On May 28th, 1937, Johnson closed this clinic after eights months of operation, and reports that he had about thirty cases of cataracts which he treated using the Ray Machine, and that all of the thirty cases, except one, "has been benefited. The process of coagualation has been stopped and there has been a distinct retrogression of the opacities, resulting, in most cases, in a complete restitution of the function of the eye." Other conditions were cleared up as well, but this clinic focussed on cataracts. (The Pasadena Home for the Aged was established in 1911, and then funded with property and care by William Scripps in 1912. The Scripps name pops up several times in the Rife story, always connected with Milbank Johnson as well! The facility is now the Scripps Home.)
